Over the weekend we had the pleasure of being invited to set up a little 'mock studio' in the beautiful Royal Exhibition Buiding, in Carlton Gardens, as part of PREMIERE. We did a little preview showing of the new ss1112 collection, to be continued.... I am pleased to say it was a great success! We met some lovely folk, from across the country and (excitedly!!!) will be stocking in a couple of new locations shortly.

For now though, I've got a pop up shop AND fashion show to get ready for.

I've decide its time to broaden the discussion. I'm being thrown a lot of info at the moment. Articles from one side of the info-net to the other...time to share..

Zandra Rhodes, YIELD exhibition, Wellingon NZ.

YIELD- an exhibition looking at zero waste concepts in the fashion industry. Holly Mc Quillan the co-curator has some interesting things to say about the show here
I'm enjoying this discussion as zero waste is something I am aware of, do my best to consider and incorporate. Having said that, with all my other limitations in designing, ie recycled material, working with clothing not flat fabric, maintaining a viable re-manufacturing model within these limitations etc it is not my main focus in the design process. I focus more on putting the 'waste' from my production processes back into the making and designing system. You can see the latest restults of this process if you make it along to the Sisters Market tomorrow- 10-4pm @ the Brusnwick town Hall.

Haven't yet read this one, but plan to at some point. I think this is exploring the challenges involved in making it possible for consumers to make good choices when purchasing clothing. It's a really complex area, one that I struggle to offer any answers to, but that is being discussed more and more amongst those of us in the industry. I hope to be able to throw some ideas around in this space, though, at some point.

And one more piece to get your noggins thinking. The thing that troubles me about this article is its as if the writer is hunting for a single/perfect solution. I'm not so pleased when she talks about the pre-organic farm "not being organic at all'. If we didn't support farms in transition, then we'd have business going 'out of business' for 5 years or so it takes become certified as 'organic'. I agree there are issues with the 'recyclable shoe not being able to necessarily be recycled', but I don't think that is necessarily greenwash. It is inevitable that certain parts of industry will change before the other parts catch up. We really are still at the very beginning of a a very big learning curve. Lets stay positive about it and keep the discussion happening.

I can confidently say.

A picture of the finished dress you ask for... here is a 'not quite there yet' version. Bit of work yet to be done to make it sit beautifully on the body, but at this point I am loving the shapes just hanging there on the wall (yes a front view Julian!!...but the back is well, dull at this point in time..and I can't hang it sideways) The one on the right is using the same concept only it's made from recycled men's shirts. This one is also fun but needs some jigging...I got it on...just.. but got a little stuck trying to get it off..yes awkward..and a little embarrassing...thankfully no-one else was in the studio at the time, so I got to experience that little moment

I booked in to do a workshop a few weeks ago. It looked interesting. A lady from the studio recommended it too me, said the guy was AMAZING. So I did. it. Here I am 5 days later still blown away by the power of such an experience. Julian was, well, much more humble than his promotional material had lead me to believe. In fact I was empowered by his openness and willingness to share his ideas. This doesn't normally blow me away, in fact people have said the exact same thing to me when sharing the secrets behind my work. But Julian managed to remind me, that by sharing our ideas, we are pushed to find more. In being pushed to find more, we challenge ourselves. And that's a good thing right. I do preach the idea of not fearing this offering, but at times I'm not sure that I entirely trust in it. It would be true to say that sometimes I loose faith in this mentality. But I reckon that Julian has managed to make it stick this time. Lodged it in a place it hasn't been before. Somehow I feel like he has allowed me the confidence to trust in that idea. I really do feel it. Without this mentality as designers we can hold ourselves back. Without this mentality we can loose trust in the world to provide us with a playground for learning and interacting and growing better within ourselves. Without it, there's no reason to be brave and to move forward.

As I said, Julian appears not quite so humble on his facebook page (!) but in real life he presents a truly inspiring picture of someone purely driven by the desire to inspire, push boundaries, challenge convention (and ourselves) to dig below the surface. His philosophy goes well beyond the limitations of a designing a dress. That's what I love about his work. You could spend hours perusing his site. Thankfully it's only open Wednesday's. Yep, one day a week between 10am-8pm, so I can't. Just Wednesdays. That way only those who truly want to know what he's up to will bother setting their alarm not to miss it! Apologies I'm posting this a bit late, you'll have to wait till next week now.

Incredible. I love a bit of unexpected inspiration. It's mind blowing. Hard to put into words.

I have exciting news. I've been keeping it a secret but word is getting out, so I've decided to fill you in.

I've been working on a show with the gorgeous and talented Jeweller Emma Grace.

We are quite excited.

In just over 3 weeks we will be launching Wearit, an exhibition and workshop series, run by Emma and myself. Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your very own MüCKE shirttop, or perhaps you've got a stash of jewellery that's just been lying dormant in the hope that you will one day invigorate new life into it. Well, that chance has arrived and with a total of 8 workshop dates and times you'll be sure to find something that suits. That is of course, unless you're in Sydney. Tell your Victorian friends and before long you may even find us in Sydney offering you the very same gig. Spread the word. Share the 'make it yourself' recycled love.

de cluttering

I'm of the mind that less 'stuff' makes for a clearer mind. yet I've never quite been able to achieve, well either of those things really. moments of clarity, sure. but not a totally

clear

mind.

this year I'm on a mission to increase THOSE moments.

so far I've been handing old clothes over to the op shops, cleaning up my computer files and discarding of the stuff that I can't justify holding onto any longer. ie the shoes that I loved for so long that, when I wore them I was walking on the pavement instead of the sole...I dearly hate throwing this stuff out. stuff that I see still has potential. and is perhaps not quite 'dead' all over, but my head has really run out of S P A C E for the things i know I will not ever get around to

fixing/reusing.

this month i have also started to de-clutter the studio. after 5 years of, 'maybe that item of clothing will come in handy' i've begun to move things on to new homes. i also bought this plant

Today.

It's the first day of the Chinese New Year.

Year of the Rabbit, hippity hop...

Some of you might feel like you'd like to start the year again.

I've had good feelings about this year, 2011.

Double 1's after all.

Such balance, visual greatness in numbers like that!

We've already had 1.1.11 and 11.1.11, and how about 11.11.11 yet to come.

Regardless of all that, I still think I had a false start to this year.

Four days ago a car crashed into me,

on my bike*

I was lucky,

VERY

lucky

to escape with just bruises,

bumps

and some grazes

minus 1

bike.

So, today is a New Year and I'm back at work

again

but I'm not yet feeling

100%

I doubt whether all the people in Queensland who've lost their homes, or part thereof, to the floods or Cyclone Yasi, will feel its an ideal time for a New Year either. The list of natural disasters could go on.

Some perhaps will just be thankful to be alive.

I'm definitely thankful, there is no doubting that,

still,

I think I'll wait and see

how I feel in March.

Begin the year with the Tibetans perhaps.

A time for NEW. A time for FRESH. IDEAS! Resolutions! Aiming high, moving forward and getting better. Better than what? Better than before I guess... So long as I'm moving , well preferably forward but backwards works too at times. Two forward, one back..you get the deal.

My goal for this year is to get better at doing stuff and to learn other 'stuff' in the process. There. That's vague for you!

Better at promotion and marketing.

Emma Grace Treasury workshop

The Treasury is a jewellery "fix-it- remake it- recreate it-preserve it- don't throw it out!" workshop being run this weekend by the clever and talented jeweller, Emma Grace. I've also been invited along this weekend to share some ideas and inspirations on adapting old things into new things.

In Emma's words, this it what the workshops are all about:

"It is an opportunity to re-connect with the idea of community; to exchange skills, materials, thoughts and inspiration. Participants will sit around the table with plates of food and tattered jewellery piled high and leave at the end of the day with a bundle of ‘new’ jewellery and a bunch of new friends.

The Treasury is about sustainable fashion – moving away from ‘throw-away culture’ and leading back towards the way we used to live; where if something broke, you fixed it, and if it got old, you made it into something new."

On Tuesday, screen printing in the outdoors turned into a quick dash and scurry inside as the droplets started falling. Oops! At least its water-based ink I'm using and not a great deal of accuracy is required, its just the texture I'm after for the screen printed t-laces you can see below.

I've been seeing a few similar accessories to the t-lace of late...In fact they seem to be everywhere, but largely not created from recycled materials. Let me assure you that MüCKE is a design label (ie. I design solutions, I don't follow fashion) and that the t-lace was created out of an explorative process, over 4 years ago. In the coming weeks I'll post some pics and give you more on the background of the MüCKE t-lace. For now, feel free to browse a selection of them for sale here.

Apparently, there was snow in Victoria yesterday, down to 900 metres. Well, I believe it. This morning, and don't be deluded by the sunshine in the pictures, my face was actually frozen...in shock...as I stumbled back into the house after a brief morning stroll. I should be organising quite a number of things right now, but no. Here I am in front of the computer. Don't get me wrong, I have lots of things to do on the computer, sort through my latest SS1011 collection images, design and layout a whole lot of promotional material for the Melbourne Design Market (this weekend) AND Design:Made:Trade (next week), send out invites to the Trade Fair, etc, etc. But no, here I am writing this here blog. Although I know it's not altogether unproductive, it sure does feel like I'm not really shifting the mountains I should be...Hmm what do you think of these?

Did you know?

If you've been following MüCKE for a while, you'll probably already know this. Or if you know me, personally, you will, no doubt, definitely know this. But for those of you who don't, a little fact about MüCKE and more specifically me, owner/director/head designer, Ellie Mücke, is that I was born in Daylesford, in country Victoria. Not a big fact, no. But perhaps it gives you another little insight into the roots of MüCKE. Daylesford is a beautiful little town in central Victoria, populated by tourists in groovy cafes on the weekend and bathing in mineral water at any opportunity! It's worth a visit if you haven't been.

You'll understand now why I'm excited this week, to be doing my very first market in Daylesford. The town that I spent much of my childhood roaming around. The town I was not only born in, but went to both Primary and secondary school here! I love this place. So, I'm excited.

You'll be able to find MüCKE in the Town Hall at the Daylesford Makers Market. It's a big weekend in town with the Daylesford Craft Weekend on from Friday till Sunday and the monthly Farmers Market will be on as well.

You might get to see some of these new treasures if you're lucky...
...the earings that is, i don't think lovely Zahra will be there but you never know!
We have mountains of stock, plus it will be a lot less crowded than the Melbourne Design Market where you'll find us the following weekend.

SS1011 Photoshoot done, what a relief. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to help out. In the end we had a lovely lady, Zahra, be our gorgeous model. The ladies at the Social Studio helped us to find her, how sweet of them! We'll show some pics once things have settled down in the studio. As you can see from above, its a little hectic here at the moment!!!

I went straight from the shoot, to marking work in at RMIT, to a little presentation at the Social Studio! 3 days of intensity. Now its still Crazy busy, as we are packing up our home in Thornbury and relocating to the hills for a short period.

On Sunday, we packed it all up. After growing quite attached to our space in Federation Square, we dismantled the ENVELOPE structure, shut up shop and trundelled everything back to our studios.

Earth Hour

Fumbling around in the dark last saturday night as I tried to get ready to go out, I was reminded to slow down. Holding the one candle I could find, I stood on tiptoes in front of the mirror trying to see how my outfit had come together. Rummaging through a pile of black clothes in the darkness, looking for one specific black cardigan, I stopped to realise the darkness. The stillness (aside from the thumping music of the party going on next door!) and the beauty of this new perspective. I think I'll have a candlelit evening sometime again soon.

Today we were happily set up and up and in action at Federation Square, running workshops, selling garments and generally chatting to the host of friendly locals and travellers who wandered by. Yesterday, however was a little more taxing but we made it.

Looking Forward

Yesterday I worked in my studio from 9am to 9pm, with a headache that had lasted two days. Despondent. Frustrated. Exhausted and tired knowing this would not be the last of the long days. I've been preparing new ladies pants and tops, organising my workshop that will all be in our pop-up store come the launch of ENVELOPE MüCKE on Wednesday 17th March.

Today I awoke, headache free! I've been sewing scarves (see splat scarf pictured) and feeling excited about all the colours, the soft feel of the wool and how much I love wearing them come the colder winter weather. Aaah, how good it feels to be inspired again.

The MüCKE T-lace workshop explores accessory making through the use of reclaimed materials. Cutting, stamping, knotting and stitching are used to individualise and embellish your handmade necklace or bracelet. All materials are provided in a kit.

ENVELOPE workshop. 2hrs $55
In the Envelope workshop you are individualising a high fashion garment called Envelope. Envelope, the garment, plays many roles as you choose either a top, skirt or coat to stitch and stencil onto. Each participant receives a kit containing everything you need.

Participating in exhibitions is something that helps me as a sustainable design practitioner to push my ideas and creativity. These little rings and necklaces were created using recycled t-shirts and draw on memories of things found in vending machines as youngster. The exhibtion Insert Coin Here is launching this Monday as part of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. You will find many wonderful little 'fashion items' all placed in vending machine capsules, distrubuted for just $2! The vending machines change location throughout the festival. Here's the details:

A few weeks seem to have flown by and to be honest, I didn't even notice. I've been too busy making things and planning stuff and making more things which means I totally forgot to tell you about the Eco Innovators Showcase! We were lucky enough to be asked to put some things in this miniature store on Swanston st-cnr Collins st, Melbourne, selling only local and ethically responsible products, in a disused space! Tell your friends about it, do your christmas shopping there and if you pop down soon enough you can even place orders for MuCKE stock you've been trying to hunt down. There is so much to say about this store, it really is best if you just pop on in yourself.

Man it's been hot. Perhaps I can use that as an excuse as to why its taken me 3 weeks to update this... My studio sits on a mezzanine floor just below the warehouse roof, so when its gets hot, I mean maaaaan it gets hot. And its only November... Thankfully I've got a lovely boyfriend who just decided to install a secondhand air conditioner he layed his hands on. I know its not the most eco friendly solution, but hey, it means that MüCKE is able to continue making beautiful garments without keeling over from heat exhaustion. It also means that now I am able to bring you the NEW shirtdress 50/50. Not sure which colour to choose? How about 50/50. Now available at Milly Sleeping, InspirASIA and Pussycat Black.

It's taken me a while to figure it all out, but I think I've finally managed to get it under control. It may or may not come as a surprise that MuCKE has had an online shop at Etsy for quite some time... After a great start (aah about 2 years ago...) I accidently let the whole thing slide, but now we are back on the wagon and plan to keep it that way! Shop at home and get MuCKE delivered to your doorstep.

For a little extra incentive, we have decided to provide free postage to anywhere in Australia for the month of October. Get one of the new 'line stamped' t-lace and feel free to email us with your own personal colour requests! All t-laces are made using recycled t-shirts.

Just nine more days for you to check out our show as part of the festival How you make it, on at Craft Victoria. Here is a small excerpt from the shows artist statement.

"In sharing stories we are able to spread knowledge, expand ideas and inject new meaning into the lives and experiences of people. The Kitchen, a focal point for this show, becomes a place for the makers Hall and Mucke, to come together to do just this. Through the installation and creation of objects, jewellery and fashion, the audience are invited to experience this conversation.

Kitchen Kitchen, physically shows us ways to re-think the objects and things that lie dormant around us everyday. Inspired by these undervalued and discarded items, Hall and Mucke are able to effectively transform them into something new and contemporary."

There will be closing drinks and artist talks at 2pm on Friday the 11th September. You can also meet the artists when they work in the space on both Thursday the 3rd and 10th September. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on the show.

Craft Cubed is a festival running at Craft Victoria, on until 12th September. Here is preview of some of my work for a show called Kitchen Kitchen. It is part of the festival and is running from 25th August till 12th September. I have collaborated with a Jeweller called John Hall for this show, where we have utilised only pieces found within your kitchen.

These pieces all utelise the threads removed from tablecloths and teatowels.

Sometimes you need a pompom.

The latest in t-laces....is the t-lace pompom, pictured above.
For those of you unfamiliar with the t-lace, its a necklace, sometimes bracelet sometimes headband sometimes belt, but always a comfortable accessory- made out of recycled T-shirts. Each piece is hand cut, knotted, bound and sometimes screen printed, stamped or stitched. The t-lace pompom actually uses the waste from other styles of t-lace...how resourceful can you get!

Interactive clothing, what a great way to keep more connected to the things we wear every day. The aim of the jumperscarf is to engage the consumer more in the process of dressing. The eventual outcome is that people will wear things for longer and with greater respect for the garment itself.
